FASHOLA SPLASHES 59 MILLION ON EAGLES
…Says victory calls for soul searching
Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has said that Super Eagles victory in the recently concluded African Nations Cup in South Africa calls for soul searching as he splashed a total of N59 million on the team and the supporters club members.
Rewarding the victorious Eagles, the Lagos state governor announced a cash reward of N2.5 million for the Chief Coach, Stephen Keshi, his immediate assistance, Daniel Amokachi; N2 million, while the 4 other assistance were rewarded with N1.5 million each.

The captain of the team, Joseph Yobo got N1.5 million while other 22 players got N1 million each for their effort in the tournament. And the team got N500, 000 for each of the goals scored in the competition. The backroom staff were rewarded with N15 million just as the Nigerian Football Supporters Club were rewarded with N4.5 million.
The governor commended the team determination in the tournament and called for respects for the team coach to enable him perform his duties.
Governor Fashola decried the poor development of the game in the country as he called for inward search for the way forward.
“I have watched the lack of development in our football in pain and personal agony. So today is a day for soul searching among all footballers. This is a day we must talk to ourselves honestly; there is a victory, yes. But the question to ask is what next. We have Kenya in a few days”, he said.
He also cautioned that the team should not be carried away in the euphoria of their victory as the reigning African Champion, saying that now is the time to start even for the title defence, FIFA Confederation Cup coming up in June and the World Cup preparations.
He said, “l et us remind ourselves that the defending champion of the cup failed to make it past the first round. Now, the Confederation Cup will be coming up in few months time, it is an opportunity for the team to improve its ranking before the World Cup. And the advantage of this is that it will give the team the opportunity to be seeded and avoid strong opposition. Really, the work isn’t done yet. It is a building block from process to process.”
Alluding to the pressure put on Keshi by the football federation, he said,“There is need for us to moderate our expectation from our team. Let us respect those we have employed to do the job. It is time for everyone to support Keshi or whoever is appointed as the chief coach of the team always. All the criticism against the team must stop and allow all the experts employed to do their job.
“If we think that those we have employed cannot do the job, let’s set time line or change them. And I think that the practice where officials dash into the dressing room at half time while the coach is speaking with the players should stop. That is the team coach domain. The 15 minutes he has with his team must be judiciously used. And I think the NFF should stop this”, he said, as he thanked Guinness Nigeria PLC and the Rivers and Cross River states government for their support to the team.

jonathan Softpedals, grant unilag convocation date
President Goodluck Jonathan has approved a new date for the 2011/2012 convocation of the University of Lagos.
The President had allegedly frustrated the institution’s bid to confer various degrees and diploma certificates on its graduating students last week due to the institution’s alumni association’s rejection of the renaming of the university after late politician, Chief Moshood Abiola last year by the Federal Government.
Jonathan’s refusal to confirm the date of the convocation, it was learnt, compelled the university authorities to hurriedly postpone the convocation initially scheduled for between January 17 and 19, 2013, indefinitely.
But following pressure from stakeholders, the President had approved new dates that would run from February 7 to 9 for the convocation.
A top source at the Federal Ministry of Education, who denied that the President was responsible for the postponement, however, confirmed that the President had, in a letter to UNILAG through the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqquayat Rufa’i, communicated the new dates to the institution.
The source said, “It is true that the federal universities including UNILAG should obtain approval for convocation from the President, who is also the Visitor to these institutions before they could perform such a ceremony. But I can tell you that President Goodluck Jonathan is a law abiding President and a respecter of the rule of law. He did not and could not frustrate the UNILAG convocation because of the crisis trailing the renaming of the institution.
“What caused the seeming delay was the decision of the government to reconstitute a new governing council for some institutions, including UNILAG. We have done that and in fact, one of your senior colleagues in the media, Mr. Gbenga Adefaye, is on the council of UNILAG.”
The source also confirmed that government had approved February 7, 8 and 9 as the new dates of the convocation.
The Deputy Registrar, Information of UNILAG, Mr. Oluwatoyin Adebule, also confirmed the new dates.
“Yes, it is true that the convocation that was postponed last week would now hold in February. But I’m sure that President Goodluck Jonathan has not, at any point in time, worked against UNILAG because this institution is his baby,” he said.
He later sent an electronic mail to our correspondent to confirm the new dates.
The statement read, “Authorities of the University of Lagos wish to inform all graduating students, parents/guardians and other stakeholders that the Golden Jubilee Convocation Ceremonies earlier scheduled to hold at the normal convocation period of January 17, 18 and 19 2013 will now hold on Thursday, February 7; Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9, 2013.”
GUMI-EVIL JONATHAN SHOULD REPENT AND RESIGN
Fearless Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has declared President Goodluck Jonathan "evil" and a failure, and called on him to repent and resign in order to recreate peace in Nigeria. He also said that many top former military Heads of State, Generals Yakubu Gowon, Muhammadu Buhari and Ibrahim Babangida be banned from participating in active Nigerian politics.
Gumi was speaking in a morning sermon today in Kaduna titled "The Man Jonathan", underlining that the sermon was neither criticism nor praise of a man. He said that Islam teaches that all prophets and people of God are in the Right extreme of the spectrum, while those that fight, oppose and suppress them or their mission are in the left extreme apparently the black.
"It is our faith. I mean Islamic faith that looks at every creature of Allah critically to pass a judgment on whether it is Godly or Evil. This is how things are categorized. The angels spearheaded by Gabriel are the Godly spirits while the Evil spirits are spearheaded by Satan. But when it comes to humans, Godliness can be marred in Evil and Evil can be marred in Godliness, therefore what we have is a spectrum of which the extremes are clear cut and demarcated either white or black while the center is grey."
He said that the Good can hide or find itself in the middle of Evil and vice versa, drawing attention to verses from the Bible that read: "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves," and "For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock."
Similarly, he said, the Muslim traditions also warn, "In end of times there will be false prophets telling you of things never heard by you or your parents, beware of them lest they misguide you and try you," and also, "Beware of innovations…The most evil of things are innovations for every innovation is misguidance."
In that regard, Sheikh Gumi stressed that religious innovators and innovations that change the content or the aim of the divine message is the Evil that sneaked into all the Abrahamic faiths: Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and that this fact prompted Islamic scholars from the beginning to have a profile of every individual that relates to scholarship or preaching and leadership.
"These voluminous masses of unique profile documentations are still preserved and updated to date. Any Muslim can be categorized with these tags as: trustworthy, reliable, dependable, honest, unknown, liar, fabricator, dubious, deceptive, confused, not worth a cent, etc. This ability of Muslims to recognize that evil can creep into them, made the intra-Islamic conflict necessary so that the truth can never be hidden or marred in evil. It became necessary that each human being should be stripped off of everything superficial, attached, gained or ascribed to him and be seen as a homo-sapien first and foremost before passing a judgment on him. That is why it is absolutely necessary to know the man first before you judge whether he is godly or evil.”
Turning to Jonathan using that prism, Sheik Gumi noted that through his faith, if he looked at Jonathan the man, not the president, he would not do the man any justice since he does not know him and I have never met him.
"I can only deduce from what I hear about him, he said: "You shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?"
He said what stirred his interest in examining who Jonathan is relates to the allegation by Henry Okah, Jonathan’s "kinsman", who was yesterday convicted in a South African court of involvement in terrorism.

Man arrested over Hair-cut in Ohio
Donald Ardale is a bit of a bargain shopper.
But when the Richmond Heights man went to get a haircut this November, his quest for a discount landed him behind bars.
“This…it has made my life hell,” he said.
According to Lyndhurst police, Ardale, 65, went to Best Cuts in Lyndhurst with a $7.99 coupon for a haircut. The police report states that store employees claimed the coupon was expired.
“I’ve been using coupons all my life,” Ardale said of the incident on Nov. 5. “I always look for the expiration date. There is no expiration date on the coupon that they would not take.”
When Ardale asked if the store would honor a competitor’s coupon, that`s when things got out of hand.
“I had been there a half hour trying to pay, trying to pay what I owe,” he said.
The police report states that Ardale offered a coupon from Sport Clips. The paper had four coupons on it. Employees were willing to give Ardale $3 off his $14.50 haircut. They stipulated, however, that they would only give him the discount if they received the whole coupon, which included about $20 in discounts. The store needed the coupon for its records.
A retired real estate agent, Ardale refused to give up the whole coupon. He said even before living on Social Security, he’s always tried to pinch pennies. He was willing to pay the $11.50 due after using the coupon’s $3 discount.
Lyndhurst police were eventually called, and they arrested Ardale for theft.
The police report states that officers gave Ardale three choices: pay full price, get $3 off while giving up the coupon or go to jail. Mr. Ardale picked jail.
Now, Ardale faces first-degree misdemeanor charges for a fight over the haircut. He`s pleading not-guilty and hopes to make his case to a judge. He is due back in court for a pre-trial hearing on Feb. 25.
Fox 8 has reached out to Best Cuts and is waiting for their response.
“I did nothing wrong. Didn’t steal anything,” Ardale said. “The worst thing…one thing under a felony, for a $6 coupon that they charged me with. That is to me and everyone I’ve spoken to, totally insane.”
